In the news: Rohtak teenager raped and burnt alive

Starting today, we will regularly post links to media reportage on gender violence. In the run up to the campaign, it is important to keep reminding ourselves why we are doing this.

Rohtak teenager raped and burnt alive

Yet another horrific killing has taken place in Haryana's Rohtak district. Fourteen-year-old Sonu was alone in her house in Tej Colony of Rohtak, when her neighbour Sonu Singh invited her to his house. He then allegedly raped her.

After committing the crime, Sonu informed his mother Vidya Devi about it. Fearing that the girl might tell her parents, the mother-son duo went to the girl's house and set her on fire. Hearing the girl's cries, neighbours came to her rescue and shifted her to the PGIMS Rohtak, where she succumbed.

"I want justice, guilty should be punished. We were not at home when it happened," said Pappu Kumar, father of the victim.

"We shifted her to hospital. She was in a bad shape when we took her," said Omprakash, neighbour.

Rohtak police have registered a case of murder and on Saturday, arrested Vidya Devi. However, Sonu is still at large.

"We have registered a case on father's complaint. Sonu Singh is the suspect. His mother also helped in the crime. We have arrested her and soon we will get him as well," said sub inspector Randhir Singh, the inspecting officer.

Police could not record the statement of the girl, as she was dead when he reached. However, Sonu's mother has confessed that she killed the girl in connivance with her son.

Haryana state is in election mode, but political parties unfortunately are doing little to check crime against women.
