Doctor allegedly rapes patient in ICU

Mumbai: A doctor allegedly raped a Koparkhairane resident in a semi-conscious state inside the ICU of Lotus hospital in Vashi on Saturday night.

The victim, a 30-year-old woman was admitted to the ICU of Lotus Hospital in Vashi and kept under observation as she was suffering from low blood pressure.

The accused, a resident doctor on night duty allegedly raped her while she was in a semiconscious state. Police say the doctor has confessed to his crime.

Hospital authorities refused to comment stating that they had cooperated with the police and had informed them when the complaint was received.

According to Purshottam Karad, assistant commissioner of police, Vashi division, the woman said she was semi-conscious and too weak to resist the doctor’s moves. Besides, she added, there were just one or two patients in the room. They were fast asleep since they were under medication. There weren’t many staff members either because it was Dussehra on Sunday.

The Vashi police registered a case under section 307 (rape) against the accused and arrested him around 3pm on Sunday. “We have sent the accused and the woman for a medical test at the NMMC hospital in Vashi. We can establish the facts only when we get the medical reports,” senior police inspector Rao Saheb Sardesai
