Earlier
this evening, a public forum was held in partnership with Puthiya
Thalamurai. The speakers for the evening included Arul Mozhi
(Advocate, Madras High Court), Prasanna Poornachandra(Founder, PCVC),
Jothimani (Political activist, Indian National Congress) and
Maithreyi (Writer and Journalist). The moderator for the evening was
Tamizhachi Thangapandian. Speakers spoke about violence from various
angles – the depiction of women in Tamil movies, the attitude of
law enforcement towards victims of violence, deep-set attitudes and
traditions in attitudes towards women. A survivor of domestic abuse
shared her life story. Audience later got the opportunity to air
their views on open mike and touched on the need to educate women on
the definition of violence and the difference in rearing boys and
girls. Some also shared their experiences with violence which they
had witnessed in their friends' lives or even in their own families.
